Mission Style
weathered of fumed oak, straight lines, mortise, tenon and dowel joinery
Mission furniture is an out growth of the English arts and craft style.
Although originally thought to have come from church furniture in San Francisco, mission style furniture
was made popular by Gustave Stickley when he introduced his Craftsman collection of furniture in 1900.
Stickley Company still manufactures mission style furniture.
Mission furniture is almost exclusively constructed of weathered or fumed oak, is characterized by straight
lines, mortise, tenon and dowel joinery.
Upholstered pieces were covered with leather.
While mission furniture is usually free of ornamentation, large nail heads, simple cut out patterns, or hand
hammered copper appliques were occassionally used as decoration.
Mission Furniture, although not originally mass produced, has been of recent times, and does fit with contemporary
styles quite well due to the clean square lines used.
